This website is created to be interactive, not just a one-way communication.   We have great technology at our fingertips, and it can be a great tool to facilitate community and communication among blog writers and readers.   I put together this tutorial to explain how you can sign up for the RSS feed (Really Simple Syndication)*, and keep up with all the posts and comments on this, and any other website that you like.WHAT IS A FEED?

Feeds are a way for websites  to distribute their content by  allowing subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically  by a  news reader.  Feeds also make it possible for website content to be packaged into bite-sized technologies that make it possible to display blogs, podcasts, and major news/sports/weather/whatever headlines just about anywhere.

WHAT IS RSS?

I™m glad you asked, because evidently,  so many people are asking that someone put together this great little video that explains  RSS feeds better than I ever could.   In plain English, no less.   Give it a look, then we™ll proceed.

I use Google Reader because I like it, it’s simple to use, and to me, it is set up logically.     There are other feed readers  that are fine too, some you will recognize:

igoogle (this will only accept blogs, so I don™t use it because I like to get news too.)RSS Feeds are integral to managing web content

myYahoo
NewsGator
NetVibes
Wizz Reader for Firefox

If you need more information on Google Reader, Help is available.

Once you have opened an account and set up your reader, you can start signing up for your favorite news and blog sites.   Whenever you see the orange RSS feed icon:

Really Simple Syndication

Just click on it and it will bring up a page with the recent posts from that site and will prompt you to add the page to your reader.

That™s it, its that easy!   Now, when  there is a new post on  any of the websites that you have saved to your reader, they will  come to you, right to your reader, and you won™t have to remember to go looking.   You just have to remember to visit your reader page:)   I put my google reader on a tab on my home page.   You can unsubscribe any time to any article.   You can organize the articles in folders and categories.

One of the best things about this website is that you can subscribe to the comments.   So if you want to be a part of the discussion on anyone™s discussion board, be sure to sign up for the comment feed, that way you will get notified when there is a new comment, instead of having to remember.   You can go right to the comment stream and continue the conversation.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me, I™m happy to help.
